Remember, you can ship a LOT of stuff for cheap by media mail. Email us at kaysasmom@aol.com. We are not a business, just fellow homeschoolers who try EVERYTHING! We are currently cleaning out to make room for JR and SR high books - Yikes! **I am a former reading specialist and teacher who hates to see books taught in ways that turn kids off from reading. I've used these with my kids because I thought that they enhanced the LOVE of reading. Every kid is different - my struggling reader loved textbooks in addition to other books because they fit her learning style. She loved them so much that we bought several for each year when she was younger. My older daughter never touched a textbook. I'm happy to help you find matches for your kids.

Reading and Literature Resources - Carriage Lane Academy Used Homeschool Curriculum and ResourcesSuppose the Wolf Were An Octopus - k to 2 $7
by Royal Fireworks Press (same people who put out MCT) New condition . 128 pp. Another favorite of ours is this series. This guide to creative questioning is very helpful if you are sick of the read and spit back mentality of other literature books. I was on a quest for THOUGHTFUL questions. Designed to develop critical and creative thinking through elementary-grade literature, this series is based on Blooms Taxonomy with multiple questions for each level. This volume covers 50 stories with a brief overview of the story and appropriate questions for the 6 levels of knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
The K to 2 book has three questions at each level.
For each story the book title, author, publication information, and a synopsis are included, followed by the questions. For example, in the lesson on The Story of Babar the Little Elephant, a comprehension question would be "why did the elephants choose Babar as their king?" while more complex questions would be: "compare and contrast Babar's life in the jungle as a baby with his new life as King of the Elephants" (analysis), "Suppose that Babar didn't meet the old lady. Tell a new story about his adventures in town." (synthesis), or "judge whether the hunter had the right to kill Babar's mother. Explain your answer" (evaluation).

Project Books: A Guide to Practicing Reading Strategies $3
This book contains 6 themes: Time Capsule, Brain Power, The Family Network Guide, Put Your Town on the Map, Exercise Your Creativity, Help How to Get It and What to Do Until It Arrives. Each theme has activities that connect the kids to things in their lives. Example: Brain Power Unit - Begins by teaching information about the brain. Then you check off sensations that your brain should focus on the keep you safe when you are waiting to cross the street. Use different colors to label each part of the brain. After an explanation of how the brain helps you see, you try to find 6 things that are the same shape, size or color as a baseball. The next page has experiments with vision (very basic - hole in my hand, check to see if you are right or left eyed. Next is information about hearing. An experiment using a ticking clock is next. Taking care of your hearing. Figure out items that are different decibles. This theme has 7 more pages of information and activities. The child can write directly in the book or you can photocopy. This book says Grade 4, but I think it is more like Grade 3. Really fun and interesting book that makes ready fun and interactive. Highly recommend. This is an older book, but there are only a few dated references in the book - nothing major. (Example - in the time capsule section, it asks a math question based on the future year of 2006). I really think the activities are easy to implement and fun. I especially like the Help section, as I think it teaches some valuable information.

Reading and Literature Resources - Carriage Lane Academy Used Homeschool Curriculum and ResourcesHow to Report on Books $3
80 pp. These projects get children thinking in a new light about the process of reading a book and sharing what they've learned about it. They may be creating a new cover for a book, "selling" a book to, creating a video book review with a camcorder, making puppets of a book's main characters, interviewing a book's author (role playing), or assembling a book diorama. In addition, they can make a traditional written book report using one of several different report forms, each of which emphasizes slightly different aspects of a book. Fun illustrations highlight each form. Several fun reproducible book logs for tracking reading. There is an extensive bibliography for teachers and students broken down by topic, providing four to five suggested titles under each. Complete, step-by-step instructions for every project. Cover has some creases and name written on inside. This was a wonderful book for ideas! Grades 2-5. (I really think only through grade 3).

Once there, you will also find free sample guides, suggestions for using the guides in a reading workshop, and information about creating your own specialized classroom library! Here's a resource like no other. Noted teacher/author Lucy Calkins and a team from The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project Community have created the most comprehensive and accessible leveled lists and guides for nearly 1,200 children's trade books for kindergarten through sixth grade. Their purpose: to help teachers build state-of-the-art classroom libraries, using guides exactly tailored to the classrooms in which they teach. A Field Guide to the Classroom Library is the result of the efforts of hundreds of teachers who pooled their knowledge of children's books. Their selections are not simply book lists-each guide is packed with practical information, including book summaries, literary insights, and teaching ideas. Put the recommended books together and the resulting libraries are far richer than any one teacher could achieve working on his or her own. In Field Guide F (Grades 4-5), learn about the core books the authors regard as essential, approximately 150 for this level. Then consider for your library any of an additional six modules of books, each module representing a category, for example, nonfiction. The authors have leveled about sixty percent of these books, leaving room for teachers and/or students to choose appropriate books by comparison with leveled titles. Use this Field Guide to create a classroom library with books that spark students' interests and match their passions. Then see how much easier it becomes to teach them to read-to teach them what they need to become powerful, knowledgeable, and literate people.
